Meet Charlie King
“The foundation of the academy is to take the mystery out of playing golf. We’ll focus on personal strengths and weaknesses to build a core of essential golf skills that will improve any golfer’s game.”
Director of Instruction, Golf Digest “Top 50 Teachers”, Golf Magazine “Top 100 Instructor”
Ranked by both Golf Digest and GOLF Magazine as one of America’s Best Instructors, Charlie King joined Reynolds Plantation in March 2006 as Director of Instruction. Founder and CEO of UnCommon Golf LLC, King has authored three books – “You’re NOT Lifting Your Head”, “Golfs’ Red Zone Challenge”, and the e-book, ”The New Rules of Golf Instruction.” King has consistently been named among the top instructors by golf magazines such as Golf Digest (2000, 2001, 2004). King has appeared on The Golf Channel’s regular Monday night special, “Your Game Night.”
“Every two years we dedicate a lot of time and research to recognize the golf industry’s best teachers by naming them to our Top 100 list. These individuals are selected because of their commitment to broaden the appeal of golf by helping their students understand and enjoy the game. To be considered for the Top 100 list, nominated teachers submit extensive information about their teaching careers to a committee of our editors and staff from the University of Georgia’s Sports Learning Lab for review. Final decisions are made based upon criteria such as technical knowledge, exceptional communications skills, innovative teaching ideas, published works, well-known golfing pupils, lesson volume, and additional teaching awards won by the instructor.”
– Lorin Anderson, Director of AMF Instructor Division
Charlie King grew up in Decatur, Tenn., and was bitten by the golf bug as a student at Tennessee Tech. Charlie began his golf career in 1988 as an assistant pro, then as a teaching pro at Swing’s the Thing Golf Schools at Orange Lake Country Club. In the 1990′s, he taught at The Golf Academy of the South where he took great pride in helping students achieve their own dreams in the golf industry. Author of the first golf instruction book written in novel form, “You’re NOT Lifting Your Head,” the book marks the beginning of Charlie’s efforts to see fundamental change in the way golfers approach learning golf. He believes that more people could enjoy this game more fully if they only knew how. In 2005 he co-authored “Golf’s Red Zone Challenge” – a results-oriented approach to improving the short game. In 2009, he authored the revolutionary “New Rules of Golf Instruction”, a free e-book that outlines nine standards for teaching professionals.

Not everybody can win The Masters. There’s only that select one each year. For Charlie King, golf instruction is about helping golfers win their Masters, whatever that personal goal may be. It’s a distinction that guides the veteran instructor and 18-year PGA of America member through the development of programming for the Reynolds Golf Academy.
